Take special care when considering a continental bred horse. They are often excellent and come highly recommended but sometimes the farriery practice relies on the use of stocks and one or two purchasers have found it extremely difficult to teach a fully grown Ardenne to lift its feet.

Docking is still commonly carried out in parts of Europe so check your horse has a tail. It is illegal to import a docked horse unless it is for breeding so a gelding is absolutely illegal.

Check oedema on any Belgians or other imported horses. Leg problems are endemic and oedema can lead to handling difficulties, ulcers and cancer. It is manageable but not curable.

Take worming seriously with imported horses as they are often kept with one eye on the meat market and the worms may well be advanced and difficult to remove.

Novice owners also take care. A 'green broke' horse that goes well in experienced hands may not go so well in novice or inexperienced hands. Take advice, take care, seek help and support and avoid short cuts.

Beware also of horses 'rescued' from the meat market. Often horses are sent to meat because they are unsuited to work and could even be dangerous.
